When originally incorporated in 1888, the Village was known as Niles Centre. around 1910 the spelling was changed to Niles Center.
It was later changed to Skokie to avoid confusion with Niles.
It imposes a transfer tax of $3.00/$1,000 (round to nearest $1,000). In Skokie the local real estate transfer tax is the
responsibilty of the seller of the house, condo or other real estate.
It does not require an inspection, but does have its own transfer declaration which must be filed. Further, any outstanding debts
to Skokie, including the last water bill, need to be paid prior to transfer.
